Spiders tame Bulls

concord helmet2 31 hickory ridge nc 14

Concord defeated Hickory Ridge 31-14 Friday night on a rainy night at Robert C. Bailey Stadium.

Things started poorly for Concord as Dominique Posey fumbled the opening kickoff and the Ragin' Bulls recovered. The Bulls took advantage of the short field quickly as QB Brett Lilly found WR Martin Murrell for a 28 yard touchdown. Return problems would continue for Concord as the Bulls would recover another Posey fumble on the ensuing kickoff. However Concord's defense would hold and force a Hickory Ridge punt. Concord would be forced to punt on the possession but the snap sailed over punter Brandon Barnhardt's head. After the turnover Concord's defense would hold as the Bull's field goal attempt sailed wide left. After a blocked Concord punt Hickory Ridge jumped out to a 14-0 lead after Chase Stout's 3 yard run.

In the 2nd quarter Concord's offense would get going. QB Antonio Moore would scramble 25 yards for the Spiders first score. Concord defender Norman Young would recover a fumble on the next possession. A few plays later Antonio Moore would find Jimmy Drye on a 13 yard touchdown pass. Later Roger Smith would add a 33 yard touchdown run. Later facing a 4th down at midfield the Spiders faked a punt with Ben Brill finding Dominique Posey who advanced the ball deep into Ragin' Bull territory. Brandon Barnhardt would add a 37 yard field goal to put the Spider's up 24-14 at the half.

As the second half began Roger Smith picked up where he left off in the first half adding another score this time covering 17 yards. The defense and sloppy weather would control the rest of the game. With a storm approaching the game was called with 4:16 remaining after officials spoke with both head coaches.

The ground game would carry the Spiders on a wet night. Roger Smith rushed for 241 yards and QB Antonio Moore would add nearly 100 yards.

Tigers hold off Spiders

concord helmet2 10 mt pleasant nc 13

The Spiders kicked off the 2007 season before a boisterous crowd Friday night at Robert C. Bailey Stadium. Kickoff was delayed half an hour due to the excessive heat.

The teams spent most of the first quarter getting settled in. The first few series resulted in punts for both teams. Late in the 1st the Tigers went for a 4th down conversion in Spider territory. Tiger QB Tye Hill was stopped for no gain on a keeper. With no returning starter at quarterback Coach E.Z. Smith gave snaps to Ben Brill, Eric Brink, and Sean Willix before handing the reigns to senior Tony Moore. Moore would play the rest of the way. The quarter would end in a 0-0 tie.

In the 2nd quarter Moore set the Spiders up with an interception. Concord would capitalize with a field goal from Brandon Barnhardt out of the hold of Ben Brill. Later Mt. Pleasant would put together a solid drive highlighted by Hill's pass to Jason Talbert. Mt. Pleasant would later recover a Concord fumble and added a 32 yard field goal by Weston Brown. Mount would add another turnover on an interception to end the first half at 10-3.

The defenses controlled the 3rd quarter. Midway through the quarter Mount took advantage of a long pass play and added another field goal (30 yards) from the foot of Brown. Concord would later add a 45 yard touchdown run from Moore. Moore fumbled the snap, recovered his own fumble and scrambled through the Tiger defense for the score. Brandon Barnhardt would add the extra point.

Both defenses controlled the rest of the game. Jimmy Drye hauled in a 50 yard completion off of a tipped pass from Moore but the drive stalled in Mount territory. Mount controlled the ball much of the quarter behind the running of junior tailback Haywood Forte. Concord would have one final chance to score with less than two minutes to go. Tony Moore completed passes to Jimmy Drye and Jacquise Moore to set the Spiders up for a winning score. With seconds remaining Moore looked to the endzone for the winning score. His pass was picked off by Jacob Hunt to seal the win.

It was the first victory over the Spiders in 5 tries for Mount.

Concord will return to action next week as they travel to county rival J.M. Robinson.
